Wanting to move to Canada, eventually...

by Melissa
(California, USA)

I just started in a massage therapy school here in California, and I want to eventually move to Edmonton, Alberta. I was wondering what exactly I would have to do to get a license there... would I have to take more schooling?

I saw a chart once and it said that Alberta wasn't regulated, and I'm not quite sure what that means for me. I don't want to get up there and find out that I can't practice what I learned to do. Any information will be appreciated, thanks so much!

I just moved back from Calgary about a month ago. I only lived there for a year. I came back to Mississippi to get a degree in Massage Therapy. I eventually plan on moving back to Canada and work there. Have you found anything out about the laws for practicing massage therapy in Alberta? I have looked all over the internet and cannot seem to find anything that will give me an answer. Thanks.

No, actually. Nothing at all. I've had a really hard time trying to find out about it too. But...I guess if you talk to one of your teachers, or the person who runs your school, they might know. I asked someone and they said that I wouldn't need any extra training or anything, but...I guess I'll see when I get there. Sorry I couldn't help out more =[

Alberta regulations
by: Anonymous

Hi there,

I work in Edmonton as a massage therapist. The association I am with is the natural health practitioners of Canada there are no real regulations here in Alberta yet but they are pushing for it. Go to the nhpc's website for more info

I am a Canadian RMT and lived for a few years in Banff Alberta. At that time Alberta was in the process of becoming regulated and the regulatory body is the MTAA, massage therapy association of alberta. I am originally from Ontario and Alberta was following the same guidelines. Here a 2200hour program is required. It's been a while so I'm not sure what the breakdown is for hours per course but it also requires approxim. 150hours clinical practice. My suggestion would be to contact both alberta associations (MTAA, NHPA) and see what is required. If you aren't planning to stay in Alberta I would also look into the requirements from the other provinces as they are different. Ontario and BC have the highest regulations so you might want to look into those. When I moved from ontairo to alberta all I had to do was transfer my licence from one province to the other, no testing required b/c ontarios requirements are so high.

Hope this helps a little!
