UK Massage Qualification in the US

by Rachel

As a British Citizen, I am currently looking to work as a Beauty/Massage Therapist in the Tri State Area (NY, NJ & CONN). I qualified in the United Kingdom with NVQ Beauty Therapy (EDEXCEL) and NVQ Level 3 Spa Therapy (VTCT) in 2004 & 2005 respectively.

However, I understand to work in these areas I am required by law to obtain a license to perform my services professionally.

This process operates completely differently in the UK. Only liability insurance and a valid qualification is required to do so. Therefore I am very confused and would appreciate some advice on how to go about obtaining the relevant license and securing employment here in the United States.

Also as my credentials that I currently hold, cover all aspects of Facial Therapy, Massage, Nail Care and Holistics, I would very much like to be able to offer all of these. I have heard many therapists specialise in one area. I would also like to know if it would be possible for me to provide all.

I"m a therapist licensed in New York
by: Frances

I'm not sure about NJ or CT, but in new york you need to pass a state license exam in order to practice legally. What you would need to do is contact the NYSEducation Dept.'s Office of Professions. There you would find information out of state (as well as country) applicants trying to work in NY. You may have to go back and forth and send your transcipts and all pertaining qualifications to them and from there see what they say in terms of any other credits or modalities you may need. For example, in NY you need to have some sort of Asian modality to practice, in my school we were taught shiatsu. But basically all the information for NY would be there. Hope that helped a bit.
