Tips for a Newbie

by Rachel Harbin
(WA soon to be TX)

Hi my name is Rachel and I would like to go to massage shool, but I have a problem. I have two kids, if I go to massage school will I be missing out on them? And, I don't live in the area of where I would like to go to school any ideas of how I should work this?

Kids / career
by: Anonymous

It is not easy to go to school full time with kids. I have a friend who works full time, goes to massage school part time. There are days (even weeks) when she has a hard time with it. You have to have support, obviously. She has her mom to help out.

I guess the real question is, will the time away from them now benefit you all in the long run? Will you be a happier, healthier parent if you change careers? Can you better support your family by doing massage?

If you need a (new) career to support your family, is massage something that you will enjoy? What other careers have you considered (that would require a similar commitment)? What is it about massage that attracts you? Have you researched the market in Texas?

Have you taken a weekend intro course? Many schools offer them. I am going to Cortiva in Seattle and they had one. I think it was around $100 for a two day hands on intro. That's one way to see if it's right for you. There may be other intro courses offered by independent instructors (those who offer CEUs in their specialty, for example).

Starting a new career as a parent is not easy but it can be done, and it can pay off. Good luck to you.

Newbie with Kids
by: Anonymous

I am a mother of 2 young kids and am taking night classes. My school is 40 mins away, I finish school in June and it hasn't been easy. I miss my kids and they miss me, BUT I realized that this is what I want to do and it's going to be hard but in the end it will pay off!

If you are passionate about it, then go for it! They will one day understand, until then, hold back the tears when they are crying for you not to leave because it will happen.

Torn single mom
by: Anonymous

Your comment was very helpful to me. I am a single mom of a 10 year old boy. My life is my son but I need to better secure our financial situation. I am going to start a MT/facial specialist program at night for 10 months. I have support from my family but have a hard time letting go. I always put others needs first before my own. I believe I would be a great massage therapist. I have a great passion for helping others and feel I would give 100% to each client. I have no doubt I would make a great MT. I just worry about my son and not having enough time for him. Also juggling working fulltime, and school. Can I handle it? I really need to mentally prepare for the struggle so I can make it. Any parents out there in the same boat?

I am taking evening classes and work full time . I have 2 kids and I am a single parent with NO support . My oldest is watching her sister in the eve while I am at school . If it wasnt fo her i wouldnt be able to follow my dream . It can get very tough and heart breaking at times but I know my kids will be very proud of me when I am done with school.
Good luck to you :) YOU CAN DO IT!!!
