Subcontract Massage when Starting Out

In my opinion, being a subcontractor is the best employment type for someone just starting out. You won't need to provide your own clients, sheets, supplies, etc. The spa or office you are working for should supply everything you need. If you can get on with a good organization, they can keep you very busy while you are establishing your own practice.

Without A Doubt! But . . .

On the contrary, not all subcontracting jobs provide everything. I have recently started subcontracting and provide all of my own sheets, oils, laundry, etc. plus any extras I want to offer. The upside to that being I get a higher percentage! =) Even still, subcontracting is the most realistic way for new therapists to start and get involved in what the eventual goal of owning your own place because you get to see how a successful business is run! I love it so far!

Yes, if you are truly a subcontractor or "independent contractor", you are supposed to provide all of your supplies, book your own appts, etc. I've been on both sides, an employee for a spa and worked for myself. And now I have hired a technician as my business is more than I can physically handle. I supply everything for her, all she has to do is show up and perform the work. Technically she is paid as an independent contractor because I hadn't educated myself on what I need to do to have an "employee" (much more complicated). Being the "boss" is not that easy, be careful what you wish for :) When she is sick or her car doesn't start, I'm the one who has to deal with it. I'm starting to think being an employee was way easier!

No one on this site is addressing the issue of therapists "starting @ a spa, etc. and then leaving with their clients" as an ethical issue? The past employer did supply the technician with the clients and now all of that income, education, time spent in training the tech has walked out the door? I hate the idea of non-compete contracts, but the technician does need to be appreciative of the marketing and all of the other legwork that is provided by the employer. I'd love to hear other thoughts!

I'd like to think that if a business takes good care of the employees that they carefully choose, it's a win for all involved. that's what I am hoping for!
cheers!
