Slave labour

Dont do it! You are judged only on your ability to sell products! I was made to do 8 massages a day....and all of us were bullied by managers to sell sell sell products....thats how u are rated...they dont care about your training and skills.

Nearly all ship spas are run by Steiner transocean who are the most morally corrupt company you will ever hear of. They train even beauty therapists in Londn who dont know any thing about massage to do a "deep tissue"!
They only care about money.

I came back injured after 4 months and left just in time to save my body from further damage!
Dont do it!!!!

Walking on Eggshells is not fun
by: Kristie P

Wow! I know how it feels to work like a slave and get no respect at all. This was in a spa. The work environment was EXTREMELY hostile!!! There is no sense in having to work somewhere, doing what u love the most and have to step on eggshells everyday not knowing that if u blink wrong u get fired. I only got commission, but it was worth it in some ways. I do know that the other casinos locally offered hourly pay, and full benefits along with the commission... so imagine how bad i felt.

I would love to land my dream job doing beach front massage. I know it takes time to build up experience, but it would be nice to land a job like that just by being good at what you do. I know Im good with my techniques, but I know I will get even better over time with more experience and learning new modalities.

Slave labor does suck though. My body was getting majorly abused. Couldnt eat right, losing sleep... i made dang good money but my body was paying for it. I can honestly say that no one should have to sacrifice their body for any workplace if you yourself arent getting anything out of it. That might sound selfish, but you have to take care of yourself because no one else will.

I hope this comment helps someone out. I didnt mean to sound as if i am ranting, i just want future massage therapists and people that are working under these conditions know that there is always something out there that is better for you, your body and peace of mind.

Steiner
by: Anonymous

i completed 9 month contract. resigned after couple of months but then decided to continue. i have never experienced a working environment so stressful. the manager doesnt have any respect or appreciation for its worker. ive never felt so worthless and tensed.

the only things Steiner wants is exactly money and willing to do anything to get it. people doesnt matter!!!

ive been wondering what kinds of people gives training for the managers. because obviously the problem is there!! hell no gonna do it ever again.. but if you want to build patience and get experience of being bullied, off you go. on the other hand you will get friends that wont ever disappear from your life. the common experience will tight you together forever.

rude comments
by: Anonymous

whoever is putting these negative comments on the site really should stop. Its discouraging....this is a forum to support and give knowledge to one another. Its ignorant and only serves as a distraction for much needed attention. Eight massages in a day is exhausting, especially under grueling conditions. If you don't agree fine but don't post rude comments, that can go suck an egg!

bad body mechanics? Ridiculous.
by: Anonymous

Average massages per day are 4-5 in high-end spas where therapists want to continue without injury. The spas don't push people because they KNOW it leads to injury and don't want to pay insurance. Average massages per week, 25..yes, some people do longer days and have more days off.. You can't have longevity in this business-no matter what your body mechanics are--if you abuse it, and giving massage back to back for 12 hours like that will lead to injury (I've done it). Having no time between for tai chi/yoga/stretching WILL lead to injury.

Are u a massage therapist??
by: Anonymous

I hope the people making the comments about 8 hrs of massage not being much are massage therapist, and if u are I wonder how long u have been doing it. I agree that would be very taxing on your body!! Good Luck and I hope u have found better employement!!

too many massages?
by: Anonymous

Studies show that clearly that at least 1/3 of massage therapists suffer from injuries from doing massages (too many per day or long term effects). And that about 1/2 have to work reduced hours or with reduced pressure.

Massage therapy is rated as HARD LABOR as is ditch digging. (As expressed by my chiropractor after an injury.)

Pressing 20 - 35 # of pressure for an hour at a time in relatively the same position can definitely cause injuries.

Of course, there are different styles that may not require that much pressure. But I find that most people want a relatively deep massage.

I love working as a massage therapist and have met a few therapists who have endless energy and strength... doing 6-8 deep massages a day with no trouble. But everybody can't do that. Relatively few can do that. My max was 5-6 a day, although I've done 8 in a day. But after several whiplashes and falls, I can no longer do that number.

My own daughter became a massage therapist but refused to work in the business after learning how hard of work it is... and she is a strong gymnast.

Each person is different. To the person making a judgement about poor body mechanics, please note that you are making a negative judgement without true knowledge. If I could do 8 a day, I'd just be thankful. Please have an awareness that not all people can do 8 - but that doesn't make our opinions and comments less valuable on this site. Nor does it make our work less therapuetic and valuable.

I'd love to work on a cruise ship as a therapist. I periodically look to reevaluate to see what the conditions are. Since I can't do that many massages a day, I won't work on a cruise line... But I keep hoping that they will make it more reasonable for the therapists.

This site provided useful information to me... But I found your negative judgements not useful at all.

I would recommend that six massages a day be the max required by an employer. Of course, that's just my opinion based on the normal American workday. If a therapist is willing to do more, that'd be a personal decision. But 6 is a full day, allowing a few moments to change the sheets, greet the client, allow the client to get on the table, do a 55 minute massage, allow time for the client to get dressed, speak with the client afterward... and then allow for a 20 minute break in the morning and one in the afternoon... and a 30 minute lunch. That's a full day.

The cruise ship jobs seem to be better for the people who have endless strength because of the long long hours. Some people like that, so I'll leave the job for them!
