Reiki Massage
Reiki massage techniques are traditionally only passed from master to apprentice, but that is starting to change with the addition of some innovative massage schools.
The basic theory of Reiki massage is that the client's energy or aura has been disrupted. The Reiki practitioner uses a method similar to the laying on of hands to refresh this energy. Because of this, Reiki massage has often been called a form of faith healing.
Reiki techniques were first developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century. After three weeks of meditation and fasting on Mount Kurama, he stated that he had learned to perform “healing without energy depletion. Reiki is derived from two Japanese characters, meaning “universal energy.” Reiki is both a noun and an adjective in Japanese.
Reiki massage techniques are traditionally only passed from master to apprentice. Skilled practitioners of Reiki are said to absorb energy from the universe, then channel it into the patient. The Reiki master behaves as a conduit for this energy, which then enters the body and heals where it is needed. Intent is the primary means to direct the flow of energy.
Some alternative medicine publications have cited benefits from Reiki massage which include relaxation, greater immunity to disease, improved blood pressure and cardiovascular health, reduction in chronic pain, and improvement for people suffering from anxiety or depression. However, other journals have criticized Reiki massage as merely an example of the placebo effect. Some doctors are also concerned about the possibility of patients with severe diseases choosing a treatment that the medical establishment regards as ineffective over conventional treatments.
While Reiki is traditionally taught in a master/apprentice situation, some people believe that Reiki massage training should be available more widely, and practiced more flexibly. Because of this, Independent schools of Reiki massage instruction have developed. Over the course of these schools' evolution, different methods have been added to Reiki massage teaching. There are even some Internet based correspondence courses offering training from a distance.
Traditional courses based on Mikao Usui's Reiki massage method can be expensive. There are three degrees of learning, going from basic theories of working with Reiki energy to becoming a Reiki master and taking on students of one's own. First level courses may be offered freely, or up to $150 per course. Second degree Reiki massage courses cost up to $500 each, and third degree courses can be even higher. Becoming an official master, certified by the Reiki Alliance, can cost as much as $10,000 in total. However, Reiki massage does not have any official governing body or regulation. Therefore, there is a great deal of variation in training, from the traditional school to independent learning centers. Reiki massage is covered as part of a many conventional massage therapy programs as well.
