NY Massage License Requirements

by Sandie Aldridge
(Buffalo, NY)

I don't have a question, I have a correction. New York State requires 1000 hours to sit for the state licensing boards, not 500. This should be corrected on your page so people are not mislead. It is very difficult to move to New York from anywhere else and obtain and the state license which is required to practice in New York. You must have 1000 hours from and approved school, meaning you will have to take the the entire program over again in order to sit for the New York State board exam. Please reflect this information on your website, I know far too many people who have moved to New York and are unable to practice.

I am originally from NY, though presently attending school in AZ. I understand if i choose to move back to NY I would have to attend classes again to meet the requirments..though do I actually have to take the entire course over! or just additional 500 to add up to 1000.

NY State
by: Frustrated

I have been a Massage Therapist for 14 years. I've practiced on and off and have taken time of when my children were born. I have a License in Colorado. and work at a 5 star spa in the Vail area for the past 2 years. AND I'm having a hard time getting my New York State Massage License by endorsement! This state is ridiculous. They won't accept my massage transcripts because they were sent to them in a self-addressed stamped envelope that I provided to my school to make it easier for them. They fear I could have forged them! New York needs to reevaluate their requirements. Putting this many road-blocks up for therapist is only going to hurt the state.

NY State Needs Reform
by: Karen

I moved back to New York State after practicing for 15 years in Maryland. I am a 1994 gradulate of a 500 hour program in Baltimore and have been NCBTMB certified since 1993. New York State totally sucks! I had to attend school for 6 months full time in order to qualify to sit for the NY State Boards, and the Board exam is a nightmare. They ask a lot of advanced clinical massage questions that quite subjective, and on topics not generally covered at any of the schools I have attended. The additional schooling that I was required to take was pretty much a repeat of what I had studied before, with the exception of Shiatsu, which is required in NY State. I am now licensed in NY, and agree that this State should re-evaluate what the heck they think they are doing besides putting money in the pockets of the schools and the bureaucrats in Albany. If you come here I would definitely recommend attending the Finger Lakes School of Massage in Ithaca. I went to the school in Syracuse and found the atomosphere there...lets just say...unfortunate.
