My Home-Based Massage Business
by Jane
(Mansfield, MA )
I was employed at a day spa when I opened up my home based business. When I had enough experience, and realized that I didn't want to continue to split half of the hourly income with the spa; I set up my home to take clients there.
I took a spare bedroom and set it up professionally, and conducted myself the same as I did when I worked at a spa. I kept the same notes and files on each person, used the same way of sanitizing the room, low lights, selected calming, appropriate music, and made sure the room temperature was comfortable for the client by having a free standing heater in the room.
Noise was a disappointing factor. In the summertime, the normal, neighborhood noises could be heard at different times of the day/evening, so I hardly ever got to open the bedroom windows and enjoy the breezes. I had to use my central air conditioning, and keep the windows closed. That solved the problem.
The other thing that hampered my success was that my spouse had to remain quiet and put off doing certain things around the house or the yard while I had appointments. I did all I could to control the atmosphere; but having others in the house did pose a problem for me.
