Moving from Washington State to California

I am a Licensed Massage Therapist in Washington State and plan on moving to California to practice Massage Therapy. Does anyone know what I need to do? Do I need more hours of class time, I already have 650 hours and need to get 16 hr more by June 2010 to keep up my license.

California requirements
by: Anonymous

The easiest thing for you to do in California would be to get a State licence. The requirement for a Certified Massage Therapist is 500 hours. This will certify you to work in most areas of the state. It is important to realise, however, that there are also local licencing requirements. I believe that if you are licenced by the State, you do not have to obtain a local licence in most areas. However, some cities have licencing requirements higher than the state ones, up to 1000 hours in some areas. In this case you would need to be licenced by the city or local area in order to comply with their requirements.

Massage in California

I am not sure how old this post is, but as I was searching for requirment for working in Washington State from California, I saw the latest response and can tell you this:

I have worked in Northern California in various cities and two counties through 8 different spas. I have worked in the field for almost 12 years (still a baby, I know), and you do not need national certification to work in any of the spas that I have been in. I have worked in Calistoga, Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, and Sonoma. I have worked for day spas, my self and destination spas, all top end. They have various hour requirments, along with years in the field. The more hours of training combined with experience equales higher pay at a better spa. The minimum requirment is 200 hours. Most spas want you to have at least 500 hours. Some cities want you to jump through hoops through their police department, others don't. The spa that I work for currently (as an employee) wanted at least 750 hours of training, and five years experiance. I hope this helps, and good luck.
I know lots of great therapist who are not nationaly certified.
