Massage Marketing Tools: Developing Loyal Clients

It is your repeat business, or client retention, that will be the major factor in whether your business succeeds or fails. You should consider each massage as an interview for your next massage. Here are some massage marketing tools to help you convert that new client into a loyal client. And check out the great tips for building loyal clients from our readers.

“It's hard work getting clients. But it is a lot easier to turn a new client into a happy repeat client. And turns out those are the most profitable clients to have.” (about me)

Share your Knowledge

Many clients think of massage simply as a luxury. After they receive a massage, though, you need to help them understand just how healthy a massage really is. This will help them understand that regular massage is a benefit to them, so that they become regular clients. Remember that you are an educator as much as a bodyworker. Like a doctor, you need to educate your clients as well as treat them.

Schedule the Next Appointment

Create a treatment plan tailored to each specific client and emphasize the importance of his or her continued commitment to treatment. It’s also best to ask each client to make the next appointment before he or she leaves your office after the previous one. After the client has just undergone a treatment, he or she is most likely very relaxed and amenable to making another appointment. This is much better than relying on callbacks or other future contact to try and reestablish a rapport and make another appointment.

Although many massage therapists are uncomfortable doing these things, it comprises a part of your business that is very important. Remember that you don't have to be pushy, instead you can communicate honestly with clients to maintain their treatment, in their best interests. If you educate clients on the benefits they receive, you should have no trouble getting them to come back.

Don't Be a Stranger

It's good practice to call a new client a day or two after the first massage to ask how he or she feels. This is especially appropriate if clients have come in to receive treatment for a specific condition they may suffer from. But additional contact with regular clients helps put you in their mind.

You can stay in touch with clients by sending newsletters about your business or massage in general, sending coupons or special offers, holiday cards or birthday wishes, and don't forget sending thank you notes to regular clients for their business.

Converting the Client

The first session with a client is absolutely critical. Obviously, you need to provide a great service and meet the needs of the client. But even with that being done, there is no guarantee that the client will come back. Here are some massage marketing tools to increase the odds in your favor:

Try sending a "welcome" card after a client has had a first session offering $5 off on the next session. This lets clients know you value their patronage and encourages them to make another appointment. You can give out promotional items with your name on them like refrigerator magnets, note cards or dozens of other promotional products. You can even give bottles of wine with custom labels printed on them promoting your business and thanking your clients. Whichever type of item you choose, clients will see your name and phone number each time they use it.
