I lasted three weeks!
by Lynsey
(England)
I worked on a cruise ship for three weeks, it should have been a six week experience set up by my tutor during my degree however I only lasted three! My tutor had previously worked on cruise ships for 6 years before becoming a teacher and assured us we'd love the experience, and whilst I wouldn't say that I enjoyed it to the full I certainly don't regret my time as I did gain a lot of experience. However that said I would definitely not do it again, even though my tutor had warned me what to expect I was still not prepared for the stress and tiredness I experienced! Most days would last between 10 and 12 hours however there were frequent times when it could be 13-14 hours as the cruise ship I was on was 5 star the treatments were expected to be too, that meant that they would often run late or you would have to wait for one of the five star passengers who very rarely turned up either on time or 100% ready for their treatment! I never had any complaints about my massages however I found it very hard to cope hour after hour with some of the rudeness of the passengers, who expected you to throw in extras at the last minute, with little or no tip, don't get me wrong some of those I worked on were fantastic tippers however the experience I had was that they all felt they had already paid enough for the trip without having to tip for a massage! In three weeks I only had four days off and three of those were at sea, so my big experience of seeing the world consisted of a half a day ashore! And although we had full deck privileges we barely had time to use them! Food was usually something quick and easy snatched in between appointments and by the end of each day I was normally that tired that I either didn't bother with dinner or grabbed a bag of potato chips and headed off to bed knowing that within 8 hours I would be back working again! After three weeks I decided I could take no more and as my tiredness hit a all time high, so I hit dry land and headed for my flight home!
