Learn How to Give a Hot Stone Massage

Massage using stones is a fairly new technique, yet clients have received it with much excitement. And that has opened up a growing market for high value spa services even for therapists working outside of the traditional spa setting.

how to give a hot stone massageHot stones can be used to help relax stubborn muscle groups, help clear sinus passages, and they can help clients fully realize the relaxation potential in your massage. The stones that are used in this type of massage are basalt stones and they are either heated with water or frozen for cool stone massage techniques.

The warm stones are primarily used to provide a quicker relaxation of your muscles at key points in your tissues. This will allow the masseuse to massage deeper into the tissue without the risk of causing any discomfort that can happen with a regular deep tissue massage. The warm stones may also act as a natural sedative causing relaxation depth that you may not achieve with a typical massage. Blood and waste is pushed through the system when the warm stones are applied which will help to flush and reinvigorate your body as a whole. There are many ailments that can be treated with the use of warm stone massage and those include: insomnia, depression, stress, anxiety, tension, back pain, arthritis, fibromayalgia, MS, poor circulation, and consistent headaches.

Cool stones are also used in this type of massage. However, they are used for an entirely different purpose than warm stones. Cool stones will constrict the blood flow and tighten muscles. They help the body on the path to healing when injuries have been sustained to the muscles or inflammation of those muscles has occurred.

Sometimes the two types of stones are used together. This can create a calming effect on the muscles while at the same time creating a refreshing and toning feel to the same muscle group. The muscles will be encouraged to both expand and contract. Injuries will be prompted and promoted to heal, and muscles that have loosened too much will retract and begin the process of tightening.

stone massage classesHot stone massage has become quite popular recently. You will find many clients asking for this type of relaxation. Sports massaging techniques also frequently use these stones when dealing with muscles that have been over extended or damaged in some way. Learning how to incorporate stone massage therapy into your overall experience will expand healing opportunities for your clients and keep them coming back. Sure it is trendy, but word of mouth will grow your practice quickly which makes learning how to give a hot stone massage very worthwhile.

Many therapists offer stone massage as part of separate massage packages which makes this a great upsell or premium offering. It is more specialized than a standard massage and more tools are necessary, therefore clients will pay more for this than a typical massage, but the benefits far outweigh the costs and clients will be convinced of that with one good experience.
