Help Getting Started as a Massage Therapist

I came across this site and I appreciate the time you all spent on giving this information away. I am 23 years old and graduated with a BS. However, western medicine is not something I want to pursue: I find myself drawn to massage therapy. Is it too late to start school?

My goals are high: I'd like to have my own practice, but I am afraid I am feeling impatient. After reading through the articles on this site, I realized it is more realistic to first work for a spa for a few years and only if I am successful in having a high client list can I successfully pursue to have it be my own business. What do you think?

Furthermore, this may sound weird but, I have no experience in massage therapy, and I am fairly small in size. My arms are pretty skinny and I am wondering if I will even be physically fit (i.e. be able to endure) enough to give 5 massages a day, five days a week. Should I just sign up for a massage class (one semester) at a local community college to discover first if massage therapy is for me?

sorry for the load of questions. Take your time answering, and thanks for your assistance.

Some Things to Consider Before Massage Training
by: Joseph A. Pullman, NCTMB

Hi Marlene,

At 23 years of age, you are far from too old to begin a career in Massage Therapy. There are many different modalities of massage, and each has its on amount of stress that it puts on your body. Personally, I was 25 when I began my schooling.

Although I recently stopped practicing Massage Therapy, I actually just started a massage blog to help keep me up to date in case I decide to go back to it at some point. In fact, I literally just posted an article for those looking to get into Massage Therapy. I happened across your post here when I was looking around trying to get ideas on what to write about for my next post.

As far as your own business, since it's not in my blog post, the difficulty of getting started really depends on where you live. If you live in a city or suburban area, it would be much easier to get started than if you live out in the middle of nowhere like me... In fact, I actually did have my own business for a little while. I guess this will be the basis for my next posting, because there really is a lot that could be said on the subject. So, thank you for the inspiration.
