Craniosacral Therapy Workshop
While considered more of an alternative medicine practice than traditional massage therapy, some massage schools are offering a craniosacral therapy workshop as part of their curriculum.
Craniosacral therapy is a highly specialized form that some masseuses will employ in clients that are in particular need of its benefits. This is considered an alternative medicine and is typically used in clients that suffer from stress, TMJ Syndrome, back and neck pain, and migraines. Craniosacral therapy involves a realigning of the spine by subtle movements that will bring the entire nervous system back in perfect alignment.
In craniosacral therapy, your fingers are your best tools for assessing problem areas. A person with TMJ for example, will obviously have some misalignment in their jaw and that will need to be worked with. However, the client that is suffering from low back pain will take a little investigating in finding the area of misalignment and then working with those tissues and bones to get them back in line. Once the area of problem has been located, a general treatment of manipulation of tissues can begin. Once you've worked some relaxation in the tissue, you should be free to begin manipulating the bone in extremely small steps back into perfect alignment.
Craniosacral therapy can be very helpful to those that feel "out of alignment". Similar to chiropractors, they work with your muscle tissue and bone structure to regain alignment where it has been lost. This alignment is supposed to bring you better health and quick healing. This therapy does require additional knowledge of the body, but that knowledge will help you become a well-studied and knowledgeable masseuse.
If you wish to practice craniosacral therapy, there is training required to become accredited. Being able to proudly display that accreditation to your clients will further enhance their belief in your abilities and will also keep them coming back and sending their friends and family. The process of training will take around three years to complete and you should have some background knowledge of human anatomy and healthcare. Which means that you can't just take a craniosacral therapy workshop over a weekend and start practicing. It is a big commitment but allows you to offer a more "medical" service.
There are those out there that wish to denounce craniosacral therapy. They claim that there is not sufficient evidence that the cranial movement and alignment actually exists. There is also a lack of evidence that this type of therapy can help to fight disease or other health related problems. Overall, the major problem with this type of therapy is that there’s not a lot of evidence to support the claims it makes in regards to health care.
However, critics are necessary. Any new form of therapy or treatment will cause those that are perfectly comfortable in their own capacity to stand up and denounce it. Among health care professionals, it is sometimes difficult to find open minds when it comes to therapy that has nothing to do with medications. As it's popularity continues to grow, craniosacral therapy routinely undergoes attacks similar to those that chiropractors endured for many years.
