checking which advertising works

I have been in business for nearly 5 years and when I started and whenever I move into a new area I use up to 5 different phone numbers - one for each advertising media/site. This is time consuming but this way I can check which of my advertising is generating the most calls and which generates the most income for that area, after 3 months I divert all calls into my central number and reduce advertising within the media that is not generating income.

This really works and has reduced my advertising costs and the time I spend on re-advertising. I use the same system with email addresses using different (but similar) addresses for each website.

How should I advertise my massage business?

That makes a lot of sense in finding the hot spot of where you move in an area then narrowing down your central market. Thanks for your help and I'm going to give it a try.

Carlotta, good to see that method of using several different phone numbers works for you. Instead of going to the hassle though, why dont you just ask the client where they heard about you when they call?

Obviously we do ask - but we have somewhere in the region of 93 sites we advertise on plus newspapers and 3 main websites, with 6 leader sites (one page, free sites with a phone number) and when we ask we tend to get the answer 'oh I saw it on the internet' - very rarely are we able to extract exactly WHERE. The majority of clients spend an average 20 minutes trawling various internet sites before deciding on which number to call - by which time they have usually forgotten where they found yours - some don't like to admit they found you on the 'raunchier' sites. In addition, when they call for information we have a lot to talk about (we are not an escort service) and we have found that asking for specific details loses momentum, it almost introduces a raw note into the flow and tone of the conversation which we work hard to make informal and friendly xxx
