I am wondering , if I have a certificate from an Ayurvedic school in India where I have studied for 1 month do I still have to get licensed in NY for example ? or does that certificate qualify me automatically and make me a licensed massage therapist in NY ?

thanks for you help

Depends on the state

Most places require a certification, meaning usually 500-1000 hours of training. You would not be able to practice there. However, there are certain cities and states where there are no requirements to massage. Anyone can massage those places. See http://www.amtamassage.org/government/state_laws.html . Looks like Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Minnisota, Oklahoma, Vermont, Wyoming are not state regulated.

I used to work at an Ayruvedic spa in Boulder, CO where you would have been a good fit, but now CO requires a 500 certification and State License (background check, $, etc).

Best, Kristin

Sorry... you cannot legally practice in NY.

Heavens no! In order to be licensed in NY you must complete 1000 hours training in highly specialized classes at a NY State Approved Massage School. Doing ANY type of massage in NY without the proper training and licensure is a FELONY!
